I know it’s not Wednesday, but due to not being well, cough cough, I needed to share a wellness Wednesday a little later in the week than on a Wednesday, cough cough. A bit belated but here’s to a Happy Healthy 2014! I’m behind on my greetings for 2014. As I sit and write this I am recovering from a nasty bug that my family and I came down with just after Christmas, yes, this is my seventh day with it, it is a doozy! I am gradually getting better in some ways and taken a step back in other ways. This is hard to admit and even harder to share with my readers that I’ve been sick. Why? Because I haven’t had any thing but a minor cold, for over five years now, I write a healthy food blog, I share with you how to be well. I was proud of the fact that up until this winter I was free of coming down with any major bug, that was my first mistake, pride. Pride goes before a fall. Even with having Lupus I hadn’t caught any bugs for at least 5 years, I’m not sure what has changed but since October I have gotten three bugs, two of them have put me down for at least a week.
So humbly I share with you that I’m not wonder woman, my body isn’t perfect, it still succumbs to those nasty germs, evidently. It is my mission now that the holiday’s are over, to figure out where and what I’m lacking in and why my body isn’t putting up the fight it has in the past.
I firmly believe what we eat affects the way we feel and how our body reacts. Eating processed foods and empty calories will take its toll on your body. I stick to a whole food, clean eating diet, lots of greens and vegetables and some fruit, dairy and gluten free. Even during the holiday’s I haven’t been eating badly except for the some excess sugar, so that is my first goal is to be sugar-free for a length of time, (not for forever) once I get done drinking all this honey and lemon tea for my throat and cough. I don’t eat refined sugar, however sometimes our bodies need a break from even the good kind like maple syrup and honey. Sugar of any kind can cause inflammation, weight gain, and cause other issues with our bodies like diseases and cancer. I have to admit I do have a huge sweet tooth, and my creative mind is prone to creating healthy baked goods quicker than creating healthy main dishes, so you see my sweet tooth gets in the way of all the vegetables and such I should eat instead of a piece of pie. I am so glad the Holiday’s are over, am I the only one thinking that, probably not.
So today I made my own horehound cough syrup, I had been making and drinking horehound tea, but I just can’t beat this cough and thought I would give this syrup a try. So here is a toast to the new year even if it is with cough syrup, to happy and healthy!
