The Maca Mango Smoothie is another powerhouse smoothie. Are you familiar with maca root? It’s becoming more widely known and used. It comes in a powder form which I add to my smoothies 2-3 times a week. It does have a little bit of a peculiar taste, kind of like nutty butterscotch, but not as sweet. Why does Maca Root help make this a powerhouse smoothie you ask? The benefits in this golden-colored powder are many. It helps increase energy and can be used by those with chronic fatigue. It is also a hormone balancer, has been known to help depression and boost the immune system too. I’ve added it to a number of different smoothies, don’t feel limited to just use it with this combination of fruits and vegetables. It can be added to soup, but I have yet to try that, it actually sounds like it would fit right in with a bowl of Winter Soup, might just have to add it in next time.
Maca powder is not the only ingredient that make this smoothie nutritious, mangos are a fruit that is loaded with vitamins and fiber. Now I know it’s not Mango season, but you can buy them in the frozen food section, like at Trader Joe’s and that’s the next best thing to fresh. I like to buy a bunch back in the Spring when they are in season, cut them all up and stock my freezer with them. High in Beta-Carotene, B and C vitamins, Mango’s add so many nutrients, no wonder we like them so much.
To make this smoothie off the charts nutrient dense, I’ve added Kale. We have all heard what a superfood Kale is. If you’re just starting out adding Kale to your smoothies, start small, like 1/2 cup. As your taste buds adjust to the flavor, add a little more next time, perhaps one cup, building up to two cups per smoothie. Before you know it you will have joined the ranks of green smoothie drinker’s. Smoothies aren’t just for breakfast, have one as a mid afternoon snack or even dinner on the go. Maca should be reserved for smoothies drank prior to lunch, since the maca is some what of a natural caffeine like substance. So give Maca Mango Smoothie a whirl the next time you want to have a nutrient dense breakfast on the go.
